Homemade Powdered Sugar (allergy free)

Powdered sugar is awesome.  It’s so light and fluffy and an essential ingredient in so many frosting recipes.  I do a fair amount of cooking and baking, and yet, I was floored when I discovered that powdered sugar contains corn (!) in the form of corn starch.  Apparently, the corn starch helps powdered sugar maintain it’s dry, powdery, fluffiness.  Who knew?

While this may be a minor point of interest to most people, if you or your little one has a reaction to corn and / or corn derivatives, then it suddenly becomes a VERY big deal.  My daughter is super intolerant to corn, so I was a bit at a loss as to how to make frosting to put on her (allergy-free) birthday cake.   Then I discovered that you can make your own powdered sugar!  And since you can make it yourself, you can control what goes into it.  Below is my super simple recipe for making powdered sugar WITHOUT CORN.

DIY Powdered Sugar

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Cane Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Potato Starch

Directions:

  • In a blender, food processor, or small coffee grinder (which is what I use) blend the cane sugar until it is light and powdery.
  • Add the blended cane sugar and the potato starch into a bowl.  Mix well with a fork.

That’s it!  So simple.  I love it!  I use this recipe any time I need to make frosting for my little one.  I hope that you like it.
